Spy thriller Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit showcases UK’s versatility

24 January 2014

Today sees the UK release of Paramount’s Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, a re-imagining of the hugely successful spy franchise based on the novels of Tom Clancy. With the film globetrotting from London to Moscow via the US and Afghanistan, audiences could be forgiven for thinking that the exhilarating thriller’s cast and crew were constantly country-hopping – in fact, it was shot almost entirely in the UK.

The huge benefits offered by the Film Tax Relief made shooting in the UK an attractive proposition, but it was the locations and production infrastructure that really gave the UK the edge.

Sefton Park’s ‘urban jungle’ to feature on BBC wildlife show

TV presenter Rani Price tells the ECHO about enjoying nature on our doorsteps

As she sits under the cooling shade of a tree in a busy park, the most obvious ‘wildlife’ are the children who scream and giggle as they run around making the most of the summer sunshine.

But TV presenter Rani Price knows there will be a myriad of creatures around each and every corner.

“As a kid growing up in Liverpool, we were sent outdoors more and we just played out a lot,” she says.

“We probably took a lot of wildlife for granted. I don’t think I realised back then just what, and how much, was around us. I just accepted it.

“But as I got older, I got more and more interested.”

I do not think it would have been nearly as easy nor retained the look and feel the director was after had we shot it elsewhere- Having had plenty of experience shooting throughout the UK, I can say that the integrated structure of the Film Office within the council makes a real difference- streamlining the whole process and ensuring that you get all the information you need clearly and quickly which was especially important in this case.

I will certainly be returing to Liverpool and will be recommending it for any project on this scale.
