A decade of productions made in Liverpool (2010-2019)
After the busiest decade of Liverpool Film Office’s 30 year history, we are reflecting on some of the productions that came to your screens in the 2010s that were made in Liverpool City Region.
Liverpool isn’t afraid to push the boundaries in the name of entertainment, and we are proud to have helped numerous production companies realise their vision and immortalise our streets to create spectacular moments on screen.
These 44 productions are just a taster of some of the many projects filmed in Liverpool City Region between 2010 and 2019.
2010
Hollyoaks (1995 – present)
Synopsis: Set in the fictional village of Hollyoaks, a suburb of Chester, Hollyoaks is a young soap opera that focuses on a group of students at a local college and their families.
About: Created by Phil Redmond (Brookside), the British soap opera has grown significantly since it first premiered in 1995. Originally, it aired just one episode weekly; it now airs five episodes a week. At its inception, the soap was targeted towards an adolescent and young adult audience, but now has broadened its appeal to all age groups.
Production/Locations: Hollyoaks is filmed at Lime Pictures in Childwall, Liverpool.

Moving On (2009 – present)
Synopsis: Created by Jimmy McGovern (The Street), this anthology series of daytime plays set in contemporary Britain, all share the theme of someone going through some kind of change in their life.
About: Now entering its 11th series, it is the second longest Daytime Drama series on the BBC after Doctors.
Production/Locations: Liverpool-based LA Productions film nationwide, but many of the series have been shot across Liverpool City Region including Crosby Beach.

2011
House of Anubis (2011 – 2013)
Synopsis: When one of their number disappears on the same day that an American girl joins their ranks, a group of English boarding school students embarks on solving a mystery.
Production: The actual home is located at the Allerton Towers in Liverpool, England and the series is the first from the network to be filmed outside the United States.

Desperate Scousewives
Synopsis: Scripted-reality television series based on the lives of a group of Liverpudlians as they work to achieve their dreams in Liverpool.
About: It premiered on E4 in November 2011 and ran for eight episodes. The show gained favourable viewing figures for its first episode, debuting with 500,000 viewers, 24% up on the E4 channel’s slot average.

Young Dracula (S3 – S5)
Synopsis: Loosely based on the Young Dracula children’s book by Michael Lawrence. Production of series 3, commissioned three years after Series 2, moved from Wales to Liverpool. Vlad (Young Dracula) and the Count flee both vampires and slayers, while the Count is determined that Vlad should fulfil his destiny to become “the Chosen One”.
Production/Locations: Filmed in Liverpool during 2011, in various locations including the disused Margaret Bevan School, Croxteth Hall and Stanley Docks.

The Big Build, Children in Need
Synopsis: Nick Knowles and the DIY SOS team take on their biggest ever build for a spectacular event in aid of Children in Need. The team travels to Liverpool to completely refurbish Norris Green Youth Centre.

Captain America: The First Avenger
Synopsis: Steve Rogers, a rejected military soldier transforms into Captain America after taking a dose of a “Super-Soldier serum”. But being Captain America comes at a price as he attempts to take down a war monger and a terrorist organisation.
Production/Locations: Filming took place in and around Stanley Dock to create scenes in Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan, in scenes which saw Captain America pick up a shield for the first time, with a yellow taxi door.

2012
Good Cop
Synopsis: Good Cop follows the work and private lives of John Paul Rocksavage (Warren Brown), a beat police constable working for the Liverpool Metropolitan police. After his best mate and collegue is brutally attacked and killed, Good Cop John Paul Rocksavage seeks revenge on the men who killed him.
Production: Filmed throughout Liverpool city centre, the series features Stephen Graham, and a very early role for one Jodie Comer. Watch the trailer below:

Blood
Synopsis: Nick Murphy’s pyschological thriller about two brothers, Joe (Paul Bettany) and Chrissie Fairburn (Stephen Graham), who collapse under the weight of their father’s shadow (Brian Cox). Desperate to fill their father’s shoes, Joe and Chrissie commit the ultimate crime, and the fear of being caught out by their police force colleague, Robert (Mark Strong), turns their lives into a downward spiral of guilt and paranoia.
Production/Locations: Filmed throughout the Wirral, key locations include Hilbre Island, West Kirby, Wallasey Town Hall as well as areas in Bootle.

2013
Peaky Blinders (Series 1 – 5)
Peaky Blinders is a British crime drama television series created by Steven Knight. Primarily set in Birmingham, England, and follows the exploits of the Shelby crime family in the aftermath of World War I.
Production: Liverpool Film Office were approached by Tiger Aspect in 2012 with a very ambitious brief, and it was the opportunity on Powis Street (Watery Lane) that secured Liverpool as a key location for the show, and was crucial in creating the look and feel of the show. Production has returned to Liverpool each season, and we are very proud to have helped them creating this world.
Locations: Over the 5 series include Stanley Dock (Garrison Pub), Powis Street (Watery Lane), as well as Croxteth Hall, St George’s Hall, Formby Beach, Port Sunlight and many more.

Utopia
Synopsis: After a group of people, who meet online, discover a bizarre graphic novel which seems to hold mysterious answers, they find themselves being tracked down by a merciless organization known merely as ‘The Network’.
Production/Locations: Utopia is set in London, but was filmed mostly in Merseyside and across North West England. Locations include; Clarence Dock, Cunard Building, Crosby, Capital Building and many more.

Fast and Furious 6
Synopsis: Hobbs has Dominic and Brian reassemble their crew to take down a team of mercenaries: Dominic unexpectedly gets sidetracked with facing his presumed deceased girlfriend, Letty.
Production/Locations: The action-packed blockbuster franchise came to Liverpool in 2011 and took over the city, filming three days in the Birkenhead Tunnel and one day on Water Street.

2014
Cilla
Synopsis: The series is based around Cilla Black’s hometown of Liverpool and follows her rise to fame from 1960 amateur appearances in clubs, her relationships with Bobby Willis and Brian Epstein to the latter’s death in 1967.
Production/Locations: Filming took place across Liverpool, with the Cavern Club’s exterior being recreated on Porter Street, Cilla’s family home at 380 Scotland Road (now demolished) was filmed in Holt Road, Kensington and the Belgrave pub in Bryanston Road in Aigburth.
Additional locations include; Everton Brow, Wallasey Town Hall, Perch Rock in New Brighton, Adelphi Hotel, but it was also Liverpool’s ability to double for London and New York that helped secure the production.
The 8.6 million rating achieved for the first episode made the programme one of the most popular dramas to be shown on UK television in 2014.

’71
Synopsis: A young British soldier (Jack O’Connell) is accidentally abandoned by his unit following a terrifying riot on the streets of Belfast in 1971. Unable to tell friend from foe, the raw recruit must survive the night alone and find his way to safety through a disorienting, alien and deadly landscape.
Production/Locations: The historical thriller filmed in areas of Kirdkdale, Liverpool to stand in for 1970s Belfast.

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit
Synopsis: Spy thriller directed by Kenneth Branagh starring Chris Pine and Kiera Knightley. A young covert C.I.A. analyst, Jack Ryan, uncovers a Russian plot to crash the U.S. economy with a terrorist attack.
Production/Locations: Filmed in the city centre in late 2012, Director Kenneth Branagh said: “Liverpool was able to provide us with some old Imperial Moscow that, frankly, is gone.”

2015
Foyles War (Series 8)
Synopsis: Detective Chief Superintendent Foyle, a man of scrupulous integrity who, having survived the First World War, solved crime in Hastings during the Second and now finds himself working with MI5 to keep the country safe, while bringing justice to those who deserve it.
Production: Shot entirely on location in Liverpool during a 14 week shoot in early 2014, producer, John Chapman said: “Liverpool is doubling up for London, Poland, Southampton and France” John explains.

Close to the Enemy
Synopsis: Series from the critically acclaimed writer, Stephen Poliakoff, Close to the Enemy takes viewers back to 1940’s England during the height of war, as a British Captain is tasked with ensuring that a captured German scientist is put to work at the Royal Air Force.
Production/Locations: The show was filmed largely in Liverpool after the production deemed the Northern city’s locations to be far superior to that of the UK capital. According to Poliakoff himself, Liverpool offers far more “unspoilt” locations over its Southern counterpart.
During the production’s stint in Liverpool, Brunswick Place was under lockdown for a high-speed car chase while Castle Street in the city centre was used to double as parts of Central London.

2016
Houdini & Doyle
Synopsis: Houdini & Doyle is a British-Canadian-American television drama series loosely based on the real-world friendship of Harry Houdini and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Set in 1901 London, shortly after the publication of Doyle’s The Great Boer War. Houdini and Doyle become involved in the investigation of several mysterious deaths.
Production/Locatoins: Filmed across a wide variety of Liverpool’s pristine, period architecture, locations include: Liverpool Town Hall, Rodney Street, Water Street and Stanley Dock.

The Five
Synopsis: The Five is a British crime drama television series, created by crime author Harlan Coben, that sees friends reunited when DNA evidence left at a murder scene is revealed to be that of one of the friends’ younger brother, twenty years after he disappeared while playing in the park with the four friends.
Production: Set in the fictional town of Westbridge, the series was filmed on numerous locations in Liverpool, Wirral, Runcorn, and further across North West England.

Broken
Synopsis: Father Michael (Sean Bean), a Catholic priest presiding over a Northern urban parish who is modern, maverick, and reassuringly flawed; must be confidant, counsellor and confessor to a congregation struggling to reconcile its beliefs with the challenges of daily life.
Production:/Locations This series was filmed in Liverpool, with the featured church being St Francis Xavier Church, Everton.

Little Boy Blue
Synopsis: Four-part drama focusing on the murder of Rhys Jones in Croxteth, Liverpool in 2007. Stephen Graham was cast as Detective Superintendent Dave Kelly and Sinead Keenan and Brían F. O’Byrne were cast as Melanie and Steve Jones, respectively.
Production/Locations: Whilst filming took place in Liverpool, the murder scene itself was filmed outside Liverpool as a sign of respect for his parents. However locations used in Liverpool include the Anglican Cathedral and Liverpool Crown Court, as well as a particularly emotional scene, where the show recreated the minute applause held for Rhys at Goodison Park just days after his murder.

The Witness For The Prosecution
Synopsis: British mystery drama thriller television serial broadcast on BBC One over Christmas 2016. The two-part programme was adapted by Sarah Phelps and directed by Julian Jarrold and is based on Agatha Christie’s short story of the same name.

One Born Every Minute
Synopsis: A ground-breaking look at the drama and emotion of a maternity unit, from the perspective of the parents-to-be and the maternity ward staff, highlighting the day-to-day life in a world where every minute of every hour a baby is born. And as is discovered, no birth story is ever the same.
Production: Filmed on location with the midwives of Liverpool Women’s Hospital.

Reg
Synopsis: Reg is a one-off fact-based TV drama about the campaign by Reg Keys to obtain answers after the death of his son Tom in the Iraq War, by standing in the 2005 General Election as an anti-war independent candidate for MP of Sedgefield, a constituency held by the then Prime Minister, Tony Blair.
Production: The series was nominated in the TV Movie/Mini-Series category at the International Emmy Awards in 2017. Production took place in Liverpool in 2015, Keys was portrayed by Academy Award-nominated actor Tim Roth and the programme was scripted by Jimmy McGovern.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
Synopsis: Based on the adventures of writer, Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) in New York’s secret community of witches and wizards seventy years before Harry Potter reads his book in school.
Production/Locations: Transformed into 1920s New York City, Liverpool was the only location chosen for the film, as the majority of production took place at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden.
Liverpool’s historic buildings; St George’s Hall and Cunard Building stood in for Manhattan.
Eddie Redmayne told Visit Britain: “My OMGB moment was probably shooting in Liverpool. That’s a city that I just love and find endlessly inspiring through its history but also through its architecture, and we had the most wonderful time there.”

Florence Foster Jenkins
Synopsis: The story of Florence Foster Jenkins (Meryl Streep), a New York heiress who dreamed of becoming an opera singer, despite having a terrible singing voice.
Production: A total of 250 cast, crew and extras filmed in the Water Street area for five days in 2015. Producer, Tracey Seaward said: “ The elegance and grandeur of Liverpool (with a little assistance from VFX) made it easy. Liverpool provided us with New York exteriors and made it possible for us to shoot the movie in the UK.
Leasowe in Wirral also stood in for an idylic waterfront golf course.

2017
Timewasters (Series 1 & 2)
Synopsis: A struggling jazz band from South London are propelled back in time. Time-travelling comedy filming around city.
Production/Locations: Filmed across Liverpool, locations include: Martin’s Bank, Toxteth and The Bluecoat.

Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool
Synopsis: Based on the memoir of the same name by Peter Turner, the film tells the story of his relationship with aging Academy Award-winning American actress Gloria Grahame in 1970s Liverpool and, some years later, her death from breast cancer.
Production/Locations: Filming began in Liverpool and London in 2016. In addition to scenes outside the family home, Mersey Ferry and Playhouse Theatre, Liverpool filled in in for London, as well as a scene set in New York City.
Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool was the first non-Bond film to be released by the Bond franchise producers since 1963.

2018
Sometimes Always Never
Synopsis: Alan (Bill Nighy) is a stylish tailor with moves as sharp as his suits. He searches tirelessly for his missing son who he has not seen in years. When a body is located, the entire family’s life is turned upside-down and they must all learn how to reconnect with one another.
Production: Written by Frank Cottrell-Boyce, directed by Carl Hunter and produced by Roy Boulter & Sol Papadopolous from Hurricane Films, the film stars Billy Nighy, Sam Riley and Alice Lowe.
Locations: Filmed mainly in Yorkshire with the majority of exteriors and in a studio, Hurricane Films shot on location for a week in Crosby.

The City and the City
Synopsis: Science-fiction/crime drama, based on the novel of the same name by China Miéville. The story follows the investigation of a young woman’s murder in the unusual twin cities of Besźel and Ul Qoma. The two cities have differing societies, cultures, technologies and language, yet co-exist in the same geographical space.
Production/Locations: Water Street was a major location and used frequently throughout the show, which saw it portray the two different cities in the same place. (See below).
Other locations in the show include; St George’s Hall, Toxteth Reservoir and the Littlewoods building site.

Bulletproof (Series 1)
Synopsis: Aaron Bishop (Noel Clarke) and Ronnie Pike (Ashley Walters) have a close fraternal bond and work together as detectives for the National Crime Agency in London, dealing with serious organised crime.
Production/Locations: The show filmed across the city, with locations including: Water Street, Cunard Building, Dale Street, Regent Road, Birkenhead Tunnel and the Churchill Flyover.

Care
Synopsis: Drama from Jimmy McGovern about Jenny, a single mother raising two daughters after her husband leaves, is aided by her mother, Mary. But Jenny struggles to stay afloat after Mary suffers a string of medical issues.
Production/Locations: Care was filmed in Liverpool in summer 2018, with actors Sheridan Smith and Alison Steadman shooting in various locations across the city including Aintree Hospital, Walton Vale and areas in the Wirral.

A House Through Time (Series 1)
Synopsis: Through the prism of one single terraced house in Liverpool, this series tells a story of Britain from the 1840s to the present day – a period of seismic social change.
Production: Broadcast in 2018, the four-part first series features the house at 62 Falkner Street, Canning, Liverpool, England. Presented by University of Liverpool Alumni, David Olusoga.

Carpool Karaoke: When Corden Met McCartney Live from Liverpool
Synopsis: James Corden brought his smash hit Carpool Karaoke to Liverpool, joined by his all-time biggest guest and former Beatle, Paul McCartney, as they spent the day exploring the city of Paul’s youth, visiting his childhood home where he wrote music with John Lennon, performing songs in the Philharmonic Pub, and of course driving around singing a few of Paul’s biggest hits.
Production: The pair also visited Pier Head, which saw Paul McCartney pose with his very own statue.

2019
Yesterday
Synopsis: Can you imagine a Liverpool without The Beatles? Danny Boyle and Richard Curtis teamed up to bring us Yesterday, a film about a struggling musician who realises he’s the only person on Earth who can remember The Beatles after waking up in an alternate timeline where they never existed.
Production: This romantic comedy filmed in Liverpool in May 2018, where the lead character, Jack, comes to The Beatles’ hometown Liverpool hoping to trigger memories of lyrics of famous Beatles songs through the association of the places.
Locations: Visiting iconic Beatles landmarks including; Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane, Eleanor Rigby’s Grave, as well as various Liverpool locations; Lime Street Station, Queensway Tunnel, the Port of Liverpool Building, O2 Academy and Camp & Furnace, which saw Liverpool double for Moscow.

Tolkien
Synopsis: Biopic about the early life of English professor J. R. R. Tolkien, author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Directed by Dome Karukoski, starring Nicholas Hoult as the titular character, and Lily Collins as his love and later wife.
Production: began in Liverpool City Region in October 2017, and shot on location in Port Sunlight (Wirral), Formby Dunes (Sefton), Liverpool Town Hall, Stanley Dock, as well as St George’s Quarter, where production constructed a book shop to match the surrounding architecture of Walker Art Gallery and St George’s Hall.

The War Of The Worlds
Synopsis: Set in Edwardian England, the miniseries follows George (Rafe Spall) and his partner Amy (Eleanor Tomlinson) as they start a life together in defiance of British society. They suddenly must face the escalating terror of an invasion of England from Mars, while also fighting for their very lives against an unstoppable enemy beyond humanity’s comprehension
Production: Mammoth Screen (World On Fire, Poldark, The City and The City) approached Liverpool Film Office in 2017 to recreate an Edwardian-London that gets hit by an alien invasion, and Liverpool City Region was able to provide a broad-scale of locations and facilities that hosted a nine-week shoot in early 2018.
Locations: Liverpool City Region was able to offer neoclassical architecture in Liverpool City Centre such as St George’s Hall, eerie woods in Ainsdale, as well as a temporary studio base in the Wirral, and much more.

World On Fire (Series 1)
Synopsis: This World War II mini-series follows the hidden lives of ordinary people from Britain, Poland, France, Germany and the USA. The drama switches its scenes between various locations in France, Britain, Germany and Poland. It features repeated visits to Paris, Warsaw, Manchester, Berlin and Dunkirk.
Production/Locations: Filmed predominantly in Manchester, Mammoth Screen also shot on location in Liverpool, which doubled as London on Brunswick Street by Cunard Building, as well as Formby Pinewoods and Formby Dunes in Sefton, which stood in for Dunkirk.

Victoria (Series 3)
Synopsis: The early life of Queen Victoria (Jenna Coleman), from her ascension to the throne at the tender age of 18 to her courtship and marriage to Prince Albert.
Production/Locations: The majority of filming took place in Yorkshire, but Mammoth Screen filmed on location in Liverpool in July 2018 for series 3, shooting in in Falkner Street, Falkner Square and Sefton Park Palm House.

The Feed
Synopsis: In near-future London, a man invents a brain implant that allows people to instantly share thoughts and emotions. However, when the technology falls into the wrong hands, users start to become murderous and the inventor’s family are driven apart.
Production/Locations: Starring Michelle Fairley, Guy Burnet, Nina Toussaint-White and David Thewlis, set in London, Studio Lambert filmed across Liverpool city centre including Hope Street, Great George’s Dockway and more.

Clink
Synopsis: Clink focuses on the friendships of the women in the jail, BPS Bridewell. In charge is a new governor, who battles not just the board who appointed her, but the inmates she’s protecting.
Production: In one of the first of Channel 5’s original programming, the 10-part series, created by Colin McKeown, was designed to appeal to a younger audience, fitting the target young-adult audience demographic of 5Star.
Locations: Filming took place entirely in Huyton, Liverpool, exclusvely at 33 Signal Squadron Army Barracks from January to March 2019.
Hospital (Series 4)
Synopsis: Charting the day-to-day life of six NHS Trusts across an entire city – Liverpool – whose hospitals have a catchment area covering more than two and half million people.
Production/Locations: Producers visited the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, The Walton Centre, Aintree University Hospital, Liverpool Women’s Hospital and Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital.
BBC Two announced earlier this year that producers Label1 TV will be returning to Merseyside for series five of the award-winning documentary series.

Years and Years
Synopsis: Russell T Davies drama series following a tumultuous 15 years in Britain through the eyes of one family.

Production/Locations: For three days in August 2018, the city doubled as Washington DC, for The Crown. Filming took place in and around the city centre including near the Three Graces, on North John Street and on the waterfront.

What’s next?
Filming in Liverpool City Region is at an all time high, and we have just seen an our biggest year yet, with 324 projects filming 1,750 film days.
Most of these productions that shot on location here in 2019, such as Sky Atlantic’s Tin Star, Netflix’s The Irregulars and BBC‘s The Snow Spider will be on screen in the next decade, but our 2020 line up of productions is already set to be another blockbuster year.
